Toyota Sees Higher Gas Prices and Prius Sales

Toyota’s President of the USA division, Jim Lentz, sees a rosy future for the company and its Prius Hybrid.  He sees the price of gasoline rising “substantially” in 2012, one reason why Toyota is expanding its hybrid product line to accommodate around 200,000 Prius sales this year.

For a while there, Toyota’s vaunted reputation as the world’s most reliable carmaker seemed destined to fall.  Recalls due to sticking accelerators made almost daily headlines in the first half of 2010, and then the massive earthquake and tsunami the first few months of 2011 caused supply line problems in Japan.  But with momentum building in the last few months of 2011, Lentz is confident the worst is behind them.

“The plan for this year is to grow sales to almost $1.9 million,” Lentz said last week at the North American International Auto Show.  The gasoline-electric version of the Prius is projected to increase by 60% this year over last, in part because of the introduction of a new, smaller version of the hybrid car.  The new five-door version will debut at just below $19,000 and offers an impressive 53 MPG in city driving conditions.  Lentz expects that many current Prius owners will be “rotating and bringing those…back through to buy more Priuses.”

Toyota Building Corolla Stateside (in MS)

Toyota opened a new plant in Tupelo, Mississippi that is dedicated to the production of their Corolla model. Toyota’s goal with the new plant is to win back American customers by using American made parts and contributing to the local economy. Toyota boosted the local economy by hiring local, and all of the cars produced will be assembled with at least 80 percent North American made parts. In addition, Toyota has partnered with the CREATE Foundation to donate $50 million to local schools over the next 10 years.

Score another one for the smartphone pundits. Toyota Financial Services has launched an iPhone app that makes it easy for consumers to make their new car loan payments anywhere.

There has been an average of 150,000 mobile visits per month since launching a website designed for mobile usage. The number of users on that site encouraged Toyota to launch an iPhone app as well. ”We have been monitoring usage and found that nearly 60 percent of our customers are using an iPhone when they access the mobile site,” said Jeanice Lee, consumer portal manager for Toyota Financial Services. ”So for us it made sense to develop an iPhone app for our customers to manage their accounts on the go.” The company expects 20 percent of consumers will bypass online sites completely and pay their bills directly via smart devices. In the first couple of days the app was available, there were 5,200 downloads.

The app incorporates QR code technology, which allows customers can instantly access their accounts even if they have never registered prior to downloading the app. Users simply scan a personalized bar code on their billing statement. ”If a customer is not registered for an online account with Toyota Financial Services, they can download the iPhone app and scan the QR code available on their billing statements which will populate the registration fields, so they don’t have to enter them manually, simplifying the registration process,” Lee said. The QR codes began to appear on November billing statements. Toyota plans to expand to other smartphone devices and potentially tablets.  If you have a Toyota car loan or lease, this is truly a convenience-booster.

Toyota Unveils Plan To Improve Sales

First off, this is not a story about a company struggling to remain relevant. Toyota has been suffering sales decreases steadily all year for one reason only, the production interruptions created by the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

Due to production issues, Toyota saw its American sales dip from 147,162 units in September, 2010 to 121,451 in September, 2011. The overwhelming reason was that dealers only had limited inventory to sell. That trends has begun to reverse. Toyota now has a 30 day supply of cars at its dealerships with plans to increase that to 45 days or more by the end of the year according to Bob Carter, group vice president of Toyota Motor Sales.

With plenty of Prius Vs, Camrys, and Scions on the lots, dealers should have trouble keeping up with the customers on the lot. Toyota is probably right in its belief that increased inventory is all that is needed to reverse sales declines this year.

Toyota Has Re-Achieved Pre-Tsunami Output

Toyota Motor Corp., Japan’s largest auto maker, has increased their monthly production and reached the pre-Tsunami-earth quake levels in auto production. The August output proved their efforts reaching the pre-quake levels. Toyota has achieved a near complete recovery in August, in its part supply. But there is a wrong note sounded, which says that Japan’s strong currency status is capable of disturbing the recovery of the export prospects.

Toyota (New) Supra in Development

The article is all about the introduction of the New Supra, a successor to the beloved Supra. As per the article, production of the New Supra is currently in progress. Recent reports also say that the production project is going on after the approval from the company’s CEO, Akio Toyoda. The New Supra is probably not going to make any kind of positive changes in the company’s sales – it’s too much of a niche product.
